Mummies massages!

drinking bottle

How would you like a relaxing massage in a home environment? Safe in the knowledge that your baby is nearby, with familiar faces around to look after her/him?

You and a group of mums can book me and my healing hands for a minimum of 90 mins. All I need is a separate space to set up. I can then massage each mummy, whilst friends take it in turn to look after the babies.

Each treatment can be for either 35mins or 1hr.

Sound like a good idea?

Full details are on the massage page

“Before I started yoga I hadn’t enjoyed my pregnancy but relaxing & focusing on the baby each week allowed me the time to start to enjoy it."

Testimonial about Breath & Space workshops

"The workshop offered lots of useful information & advice as well as practical exercises that I actually ended up using throughout my labour.

Since my husband was keen to be a bit more involved & had remarked on the near exclusive focus on mothers-to-be the workshop was great for us."

Benefits of antenatal yoga

Results of a study funded by baby charity Tommy's, and published on Pubmed, show that UK researchers have studied effect of Antenatal yoga on pregnant women, finding that it can help reduce the risk of them developing anxiety & depression, and concluding that:

"Antenatal yoga seems to be useful for reducing women's anxieties toward childbirth and preventing increases in depressive symptomatology"

Some words from Bernadette about her pregnancy yoga course:

Paid time off for pregnancy yoga!

You are entitled to paid time off to attend 'ante natal classes', if your midwife or doctor have recommended them to you.

See Directgov website for more info

The course offers suitable and relevant yoga practices to promote a sense of well being during this important time and are an ideal way of practicing an energising, effective, subtle yoga practice, reaping benefits for both mother and unborn child.

Conditions either associated with pregnancy or other on-going health issues are always taken into account so that the emphasis is on what's best for the individual, rather than a "one size fits all" approach.

Supportive advice

"I was fortunate enough to meet Bernadette when I was expecting my daughter. Her knowledge, teaching methods and kindness helped me immensely during a pregnancy which could have been very stressful as I have already had three miscarriages. Her lessons are well structured yet very relaxed. They are a wonderful time ro learn about one's strengths and how to make use of them".

Along with yoga asanas, there is emphasis on using the breath well, both throughout pregnancy and with a view to applying some techniques to manage labour, as well as practicing movements, positions and visualisation.

Although no-one can say for certain what kind of labour you and your baby will have, I can guarantee that you will learn key practices which will empower you both physically and mentally.

These will give you confidence in your ability to birth your baby, whether this is your first labour experience or not. Over the years I have been privileged to have taught thousands of women and their babies and am thrilled to be in the position of supporting women in their second, and even third pregnancies.

Invaluable techniques

"I'm very grateful for Bernadette's yoga classes...They helped me tremendously during labour thanks to the techniques I learnt. I kept positive, knew what was going on and the visualisation techniques helped me to keep calm. My midwife even said she couldn't believe it was my first birth."

Course includes all materials and yoga equipment is provided.

The course includes:

  • Practicing yoga asanas and energy-block releasing exercises
  • Practicing a range of breathing techniques to promote emotional balance and good energy levels during pregnancy as well as also looking in detail how to use these techniques during labour & birth
  • A range of pelvic floor exercises to both tone, strengthen & relax
  • Pregnancy yoga - photo by B.KingExperiencing deep relaxation and visualisation techniques to promote calm and ease physical, mental and emotional tension and anxiety and to enhance connection with the unborn child
  • Optimal fetal positioning
  • How to manage fear in labour and the impact on the body
  • Visualisations and relaxation
  • Mapping your pelvis
  • Using water for labour
  • Using 'birth ball' in pregnancy, labour & beyond
  • Practice of labour positions, movement & sound
  • A supportive, friendly environment where the opportunity is given to raise any issues relating to this significant time of life
  • A place to connect with other local women

Bond with your unborn child

Each session always ends with deep relaxation practices, enabling you to unravel and dissolve any knots of mental, emotional and physical tension.

It also gives you the opportunity to bond with your unborn child - particularly important if you don't get much opportunity for this in your day to day life.

These courses are an ideal complement to NCT or parentcraft classes - they do not have the same content, particularly the labour techniques.

Please note: Women can book for part of the course if their baby is due before the end of the course and pay accordingly. And if you want to ensure your labour supporter has some idea of how very useful they could be to you both come to Space & Breath birth rehearsal workshop.

Bernadette is a member of FEDANT (Federation of Ante Natal Teachers) and Birthlight.

Some words from Bernadette about these workshops:

  • Birthing ball. Photograph by Helen Ives.Would you like to learn some really useful techniques to feel that you have prepared yourself for labour as far as possible?
  • Are you panicking that you have "left it until the last minute" to prepare?
  • Do you think your partner would also like to have some tools to feel that they can be a useful help to you?
  • Is money quite tight at the moment and you cannot afford to spend several hundred £££'s on courses for this singular event?

If you answered YES to any of those questions then this workshop can provide exactly what you need.

This intensive half day workshop is suitable for women at least 32 weeks pregnant & their labour supporter(s). Women are also extremely welcome to come alone.

It makes sense for both a woman & her supporter(s) to prepare for labour in the last few weeks of the pregnancy. You will learn a range of accessible, effective & very helpful techniques and strategies, which can enable you both to play active, positive roles in labour. These will increase your confidence and reduce fear and doubt.

A variety of handouts will support the workshop however you are encouraged to continue some of the practices regularly for them to be easily accessble to you both in labour!

A Dad's perspective!

"I have been on two of Bernadette's birth workshops with my wife, Jenni, and both have been invaluable!

All the techniques helped her stay calm, positive & in control. As her partner I felt better able to help & encourage her, without getting in the way...

The workshop gave me a great deal of mental strength, too... The breathing exercises helped me a lot too, stopped me from panicking & I became much more aware of what was happening to Jenni both physically & emotionally...

I cannot recommend them highly enough!"

You will learn:

  • How preparation for labour is useful in the last weeks of pregnancy
  • the various signs & symptoms of labour
  • The integral role that good breathing techniques can have throughout this process - the most important tool!
  • Strategies to cope with early first stage of labour
  • Strategies to cope with super - fast labours
  • Management skills for established labour
  • Positions, movements, sound for labour to help you stay "open" in the body

Some words from Bernadette about this course:

"Would you like to enjoy a class which helps to revive your energy levelsgently toning muscles and easing joints, yet at the same time being relaxed, informal and fun for your baby as well?"

A boost for you & your baby

Would you like to enjoy a class which helps to revive your energy levels - gently toning muscles and easing joints, yet at the same time being relaxed, informal and fun for your baby as well?

"I have been teaching mum & baby post natal recovery yoga for many years. It is a specialised, supportive approach, taking into account the impact of joint mobility & stretched abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. Also mindful of the nature of delivery, especially, c section, the impact of breast feeding and broken sleep as well as fluctuating hormones.

It is important that women do not feel under pressure to return too soon to a strong practice of yoga or exercise, as what is really required at this time is a gentle, nurturing practice in order to revive strength and energy.

Babies also enjoy their passive stretches and songs and the classes are beautiful ways of sharing the joy of yoga with your baby, from a very early age. We always end the classes with relaxation and as your baby recognises these vibrations in you it helps them also to relax.

My return to a "non pregnant" body!

"This lovely class educated & supported me in my return to a "non pregnant" body. The atmosphere is relaxed, even giving us techniques to help with teething, colic & other common complaints. Bernadette uses fun songs & routines to involve the babies in the yoga. HIghly recommended. "

The classes also offer practical tips on teething, colic, nappy rash and so on. They will help you uncover the knowledge that is within you to understand the various needs of your baby in a supportive & non judgemental way.

My professional and personal experience has honed a variety of skills and a lot of knowledge to not only offer you some appropriate yoga for you and your baby but also to support you through this special time in you and your baby's life.

The classes are also a great way of linking up with other local mums & babies in a friendly environment. Babies who need to feed, be changed or cry are all very welcome!

Classes are suitable for mums with babies pre crawling. After this Family Yoga with Bernadette makes an ideal follow-on or alternative."

Toddler yoga

Toddler yoga is natural progression from post natal recovery yoga, these courses are suitable for babies at crawling stage and toddlers up to 4 years old.

They include sequences with rhymes and songs, along with movements, which can be shared with mum or adult carer. Stimulating digestion, respiration, circulation, dexterity as well as their listening skills, the classes are also great for developing social interaction.

Baby massage home visits

Baby Yoga, Massage & More! Photo by Helen IvesBaby massage home visits are short courses for adult carers & babies up to the pre-crawling stage, although baby massage can continue well into early childhood, once the techniques have been learnt. It is a unique way of communicating with your baby using the sense of touch-to which babies are extremely receptive. It is especially suitable for prems, C section & low birth weight babies & offers the mutual benefits of relaxation and enjoyment to both baby & carer.

Adults find it is another way of getting to know the baby & become more confident in their handling & ability to nurture their child & to feel more relaxed whilst doing it. For the baby all major body systems are stimulated, including circulatory, respiratory, nervous and digestive. Indeed massage tends to improve the appetite.

A massage manual & oil are provided.

Bernadette offers these short courses to either individuals or groups in their own home. Please contact her for full details if you want to arrange a course for yourself & your baby or your group:

Mummies massages

Please contact Bernadette if your group would like to enjoy a mummy massage morning or afternoon. It is often difficult for mums to have daytime massage treatments, especially if breastfeeding.

Bernadette can come to a group at home and offer full body massage, indian head massage & Reiki in a room nearby whilst other mums in group take turns to care for each baby. This is a great solution to the often complex arrangements that need to be set in place before and even, if, you get the chance to treat yourself and your aching body to some TLC just for you!

Please see Massage page for full details.
